Business Owner vs. Business Operator

January 12, 2022

hey, I'm suzy
I'm that friend you talk business with. I believe you've gotta build your dreams one step at a time.

Oh heeyyyyy!

Let me just start this by saying… WHEREVER you are at in your business journey, way to go!! Snaps for you. Claps for you. All the things! Cheering you on all the freaking way and celebrating with you that there’s always room for change to make our businesses give us more and more freedom.

So let me ask you, are you a business owner? Or a business operator? Do you know the difference?

The short answer is… If you cannot take a step away from your business for 2 weeks without it burning to the ground, you are a business operator and not a business owner. When you’re a business operator, you’re literally operating everything. Your hand is in it all and without you, the business pretty much falls apart. So the goal that we should all be working towards is a way that we can actually work ourselves out of our businesses and become business owners.

Lacking a clear marketing strategy with achievable goals will keep you in the business operator stage for farrrrr too long. When you don’t have the systems, vision, and processes in place to make your business run, the walls might be literally falling in on it!! So what can you do? How do you make that transition?

4 Ways to Transition to Being a Business Owner

  1. ASK FOR HELP! And by “ask for help”, I mean hire somebody. I can pretty much guarantee that there are certain parts of your business that somebody can do better than you – which frees you up to focus on what you’re best at, and eventually gain more freedom & increase your productivity and your income.
  1. Work ON your business, not just IN your business. Step outside the business and get a good look. Finding the best strategy for your business that will help you grow, make more money, and take up less of your time. Business coaches and consultants, business retreats, and taking the temperature of your customers can help you make those steps!
  1. Did you know that most business startups don’t turn a profit for the first 3 years. This is normal!!! Just keep reinvesting into your business.
  1. Be patient! Don’t scale too fast. Become the absolute BEST at what you do first! There’s no worse feeling than being in over your head and unable to take a step away.

Being a business owner and having a business that works for you is the goal. Why? Freedom. What that freedom looks like to you is going to be different than what it looks like to me, or to Sally down the street. For me, I want more financial freedom for my family that creates more freedom with my time. What is it that being a business owner can do for you??

Love,
Suzy
